Wacky Weather & Wonderful Weekends

I feel like this space is turning into a weather blog. Minus the actual predicting of and instead just complaining about. These photos were taken on a February day in which it was hovering around 60 degress. Followed by snow. Followed by wind chills of give-or-take NEGATIVE TWENTY. And as I sit here writing this, it’s 55 degrees and raining with 32mph winds.

I tell ya man. That New England weather.

But in other news, here we are on a happier day in which there wasn’t a coat in sight! The best little morning-turned-into-afternoon stroll around Beacon Hill, complete with Tatte lattes and endless photos of doors.

A Snowy Stroll

And just like that, our too-good-to-be-true 67-degree January days turned into a weekend-long snowstorm overnight. Only unlike last year, I might have even slightly maybe enjoyed this blizzard just the teeniest tiniest of bits?

I’m sure I will regret saying that as soon as I next refresh weather.com.

But this storm was followed by SUN! We spent the weekend wandering around the neighborhood in our own little Narnia. And by the power vested in it, this holy sun even got me out of my trusty fleece leggings and into real clothes for a minute. I’m getting back to my roots and back into my favorite preppy winter outfits!

Now let’s see how long these real clothes last 🙂

Little Black Scallop Dress

One of my favorite Valentine’s Days spent with MJF was at Trident. No prix fixe menu, no candlelight. Just panini and some post-dinner book shopping in a little nook on Newbury Street.

…that sounds slightly more romantic now that I type it out. It was casual and I was dressed in yoga pants, I can assure you.

BUT I wouldn’t be a #fashionblogger if I didn’t at least pretend to dress up for a Valentine’s Date Night.

It’s been a while since I’ve hung out with eShakti! Pantone Color Report :: Lilac Gray

Pantone Lilac Gray is a tricky one. Depending on what it’s paired with, I can see it as a dull violet as much as a light gray upon second glance. It seems to be the color of the year taking longest to trickle down to mainstream retail, though this coat from last spring did boast the name, and definitely pops as purple against this gray New England winter…

New Year, New Coat

Do you think I’m having a love affair with pastel coats?

Don’t answer that.

It is a briskkk January 13 and we are headed into the yuckiest and grayest few months of the year in New England! And after 9 winters here, I’ve learned that the keys to survival are Bean Boots, Baileys, and a couple of coats you really love. If you’re going to spend on two things this winter, make it good footwear +warm, happy outerwear. I snagged this Wool Melton Toggle Coat on supah-dupah sale post-Christmas, and while the hydrangea blue is getting low in stock, I’ve rounded up some additional pastel winter coats at the bottom of this post!

On Warm Winters & Weekends Away

I’ve reached the age. or maybe just stage, in which full-family holidays are just not a thing anymore. Between cross-coastal parents and in-laws and in-laws’ in-laws, it’s next to impossible to celebrate a holiday with the whole clan in attendance. So this past weekend, the Fanning fam packed their bags and headed west to Williamstown, MA for a little pre-Christmas getaway. Two years ago, we did something similar, and MJF and I vowed that we’d always try to make a mini December escape happen… to take a break from events and shopping and stressing and everything else that hampers with the joy of this season and just be together and celebrate it instead.

Between peppermint mochas and games of trivia and wandering the trails around Williams College, I didn’t pick up my camera once, so instead all I’ve got to show for this weekend are some funny photos of me in front of a pink wall I spotted from about two miles away [I’ve got great wall-dar]. Because it was SIXTY DEGREES [so different from the last trip we took as a family!], I was bare-leggin’ it and needed nothing more than this super soft Berkshires Coat, which couldn’t have been more appropriately named for our whereabouts. It seems like we always go from burning hot to freezing cold in New England, so this was a refreshing break to wear nothing more than a light winter coat.

Now everyone KNOWS I am miserable in anything but 55+ degrees, but I have to admit, I was looking for just a light dusting of snow…does anyone else keep forgetting that we’re a mere week from Christmas because of this crazy warm front?!

Marley Lilly Herringbone Vest

Confession.

We’ve been married 7 months today.

And I still haven’t changed my last name.

I KNOW, I know, but would you really want to spend one of your precious and few vacation days in line at the social security office and DMV?

Sequins & Flannel

I’m pretty sure if this blog had one of those cuteblank&cuteblank names, it would be sequins & flannel. Rustic, cozy, New England-ness, mixed with just a hint of girly whimsy fun.

Highland Light + Coastguard Beach

You know those winter days when the sun finally comes out after weeks of hibernation and the way it reflects off the snow is just blinding? Yeah. Had one of those this past weekend when we took a day jaunt down the Cape. In between wedding errands, we attempted to soak up some of that luscious Vitamin D, visiting Truro’s Highland Light (#obv) and Coastguard Beach.

Highland Light is the oldest AND tallest lighthouse on the Cape. Its grounds and view are so picturesque and quintessential Cape Cod that it hurts. BF and I are going to have a few days to hang in the area post-wedding, so I’m hoping to drag him on a tour once it opens for the season…!
