The Daytrip Diaries: Sailing into Newburyport

MJF and I often chat about how if we were absolutely FORCED to trade in the city for the ‘burbs, Newburyport is where we would head. It feels like a small city of its own {my wallet has definitely helped the local economy}, and ya can’t beat the views son.

We drove up there on a record-cold Memorial Day to catch the end of three tall ships’ stay in town. Docked behind the Custom House Maritime Museum to celebrate Maritime Days, these beauties were opened to the public for the weekend, and shoutout to the crew who definitely let me overstay my welcome.

We had a wave of deja vu stepping onto The Alabama–the same ship we took a sunset sail on during our very first trip to Martha’s Vineyard together. Hashtag young love.

Ooh let’s chat about my outfit for a sec, d’you mind? My most-comfortable-ever kicks are the latest edition to my Keds collection (c/o), and they were designed by a local beaut by the name of Alaina Marie. Inspired by “the sea’s working waterfront,” they were the perfect choice for a day on the ships. Boat shoes are so last year.

You Blue Me Away:: A Weekend on Plum Island with Lark Hotels

I’m dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s on this post in the wake of a Hawaiian vacation. While I don’t discount the incredible time we had on said exotic escape {I can’t wait to tell you more about it later!}, relooking at my photos from a weekend in Newburyport, Massachusetts reminds me that you don’t have to go very far at all to have an I’ll-remember-it-forever kind of getaway.

I was lucky enough to spend a chilly but beautiful winter weekend in one of my favorites towns at Lark Hotels’ Blue – Inn on the Beach with a darling group of bloggers, photographers, writers, and creatives last month. Being surrounded by such inspiring and creative women in the serene setting of Blue and its accompanying beach was pure bliss. January wasn’t a walk in the park, but for better or worse, I quite instantly forgot about the crap weather and crap government and crap alternative facts upon my arrival.

Sorry! Back to the point.

If you aren’t familiar with Lark Hotels already, I’d like to change that. These little buds of boutique hotels are popping up all around New England, and they are far from your mother’s bed-and-breakfast. Each has the most subtle of a theme, and to say Director of Design Rachel Reider has done an incredible job of bringing them to life would be a gross understatement. I’ve been wanting to visit a property based on design alone ever since I read about my friend Kate’s trip to Gilded in Newport.

Blue is a serene escape on Plum Island—less than an hour from Boston—sitting right up against the Atlantic. In all my 28 years, I’ve never been more motivated to wake up for a sunset. Its interiors are equally as tranquil—everything you’d want in an oceanside abode, without bordering overdone. No anchors or garish nautical motifs here.

And the food! Oh we were treated to some of the best meals {and snacks!} I’ve enjoyed in ages, including a dinner by Justin Perdue, Executive Chef for Lark Hotels. Whether you choose to stay in one of these sweet retreats or not, you should make a point to try one of Chef Perdue’s restaurants, like Pig + Poet in Camden, Maine, or Picnic Social in Stowe, Vermont.

While Blue isn’t home to its own on-site restaurant, Newburyport’s downtown is less than a 10-minute drive over the bridge, and I’ve chatted about a couple of my favorite NBPT eateries before. Now add The Paddle Inn to that list; I loved its coastal-inspired menu and awesome staff so much that I dragged MJF back for brunch the morning he picked me up post-stay.

Speaking of eats, I felt like I was in the presence of greatness all weekend alongside some of the Yankee magazine team. We spent Saturday learning how to curate the perfect New England party spread with Senior Food Editor Amy Traverso {I totally fangirled} and food stylist Krissy O’Shea. All of the treats you see photographed here were winners of Yankee’s Editors’ Choice Food Awards. I’m still dreaming about York Hill Farm‘s chévre.

While so much of New England is seasonal {or so they say–I’ve been known to brave blizzards for Nantucket jaunts}, Plum Island is an island for all seasons. Whether I was cozied up with a breakfast basket in front of my fireplace, taking a winter beach walk with Gabi & Gabby, or soaking in the views from the Blue Suite over some wine and ~~politics~~ girl talk, I couldn’t have pictured a more perfect place for a January staycation. You want to beat the winter blues? You need a stay at Blue.

Day trip season is baaaaackkk!

These are the weekends I live for. Those that make the calamity that is New England winters worth it. Give me a six hours out of the city on a spring Sunday and I’ll be a new person come that 6am alarm Monday morning.

Now that I’m working for a small company in an industry that relies on seasonal business, I have even more of an appreciation for the stores, restaurants, and other establishments that endure the challenges of seasonality. New England Development sent me and three other fab ladies up to Newburyport last weekend to explore, shop, and eat our way through town, and while it’s not quite Nantucket-level, this is, more than not, a summer town. I’ve always been a proponent of shopping locally, but now, supporting small businesses in heavily seasonal areas is something I’ve grown increasingly passionate about.

SO, long story short, HERE is my updated Newburyport Shopping Guide! Shop small, shop local.

I’m quite positive that the key to happiness in life is good coffee with a great view. PIC has that. S’mores latte in Adirondacks overlooking the harbor? Sign. Me. Up.

I’ve been living under a nautical rock because I only just recently discovered Sea Bags {we sell them at Shift on Nantucket!}. Made out of recycled sails–in the USA, mind you–they are such high quality, unique pieces. Setting you back about $150-250, the tote bags aren’t exactly a no-brainer, but you’ll find wristlets, coasters, wine bags, and plenty of other tempting treats at this location.

I first visited Soak a few summers ago, and remember being overwhelmed by the kindness of this bath & body shop’s owner, Dianne. In her tiny space, she packs in a shell of a lot of product, while still offering the relaxing shopping experience that any store of this kind should be able to promise. And wait until you meet her new addition…

I thought SOAK was my oasis until I walked next door into its new sister store, Shoreline. Turkish towels, coastal chic decor, and the softest loungewear you’ve ever felt….if you’re ever in need of a birthday present for me I’ve left my wish list at the door.

I don’t think it’s any secret that I’m a bit of an anglophile, so I feel right at home at 22 State Street. Behind its unapologetic British flags, cardboard cutouts of QE2, and royal wedding memorabilia, you’ll find Hunter boots, Barbour jackets, and a wall of Crabtree & Evelyn. Not gonna name any names, but I’ve seen products on sale here that you just don’t see mark downed anywhere…

But where should we eat?

Oregano’s // 16 Pleasant Street
I am one of those people who believes that there is such thing as bad pizza.

Oregano’s is the furthest thing from said bad pizza.

I’m still dreaming about the above Shrimp Scampi menu item, but in addition to pizza, you’ll also find incredible pasta dishes, unique Lebanese dishes, and–possibly most importantly–an outdoor patio.

Michael’s Harborside // One Tournament Wharf
We closed out our day with oysters and grapefruit cocktails at one of my favorite places in town–the deck at Michael’s. Don’t be put off by its reputation as one of the bigger go-to tourist spots:: there’s a reason it’s so well-loved. The gals and I walked out already planning our next trip up there for some drinks and apps at the outdoor bar.

As always, a huge thank you to New England Development and Shop Newburyport for giving me such fantastic opportunities to explore everything our little upper-right corner of America has to offer. Newburyport is just an hour north of Boston, but it feels a world away. Easy enough for a day, enough to do for a weekend, it has definitely creeped its way up on my list of favorite New England towns.

The North Shore (Part Two)

For all intensive purposes, we have reached the end of summer. Bittersweet, as there is no time in New England quite as joyful as summer, though autumn here is such a treat as well. Continuing with our North Shore tour guide, here are mini guides (from local residents and fellow bloggers!) to three Massachusetts towns north of the city that each boast merits for visiting in both the summer and the fall: Salem, Newburyport, and Marblehead.

Lianna, Salem Style

No matter what time of year it is, you can enjoy a beautiful day in Salem, Massachusetts! You do not need a car to visit Salem– there’s a commuter rail stop right downtown, and there is a Salem ferry that leaves right from downtown Boston! A Salem morning is not complete without breakfast at Red’s. With endless cups of coffee and pancakes that are bigger than the plate, you are sure to start your day off right. Or if you are more of a grab-and-go type, visit A&J King bakery for a hot and fresh chocolate croissant.

Rain or shine, Salem has a lot to offer downtown. Since Salem is the “witch city,” taking a trip to the Witch Museum or the Salem Witch Dungeon is usually on the top of the to-do list. For non-witch activities, visit the House of Seven Gables or the Peabody Essex Museum.

Ready for lunch? Consider Scratch Kitchen (especially if you love bacon) and The Lobster Shanty. Find the perfect hostess gift at Pamplemousse or the perfect vintage dress at Modern Millie. Or bring a little magic back to your home from HausWitch. For an afternoon treat, stop by Melita Fiore for some macarons.

If you are staying overnight, check in to the Salem Waterfront Hotel or the historic Hawthorne Hotel. Enjoy dinner with a water view at Victoria’s Station or downtown at Opus, and be sure to check out Opus Underground while you’re there. Salem is such a great city to explore!

Christine, Rules for the Modern Girl

Headed up to Newburyport? Start your day with an iced coffee and pastries at Plum Island Roasters. Take it to go and head over to State Street to pop into all of the fun shops– pick up tea at Best of British, cozy pajamas and luxury soaps at Soak Shoreline, and quirky, American-made gifts at Skowhegan Dry Goods.

In need of a coffee refill? Grab a cup at Atomic Cafe before heading over to AliKat on Pleasant Street for the latest in women’s fashions and accessories. For the best tacos you’ll ever have (seriously!) stop in at Dos Amigos for lunch. Feeling adventurous? Schedule a kayak or SUP tour at Plum Island Kayak and get a view of Newburyport from the water. For dinner, celebrate a fun day out with champagne and oysters at the best restaurant in town, Brine Oyster!

M A R B L E H E A D

Kristen, The Boston Fashionista

Marblehead is such an easy, walkable town that is filled with history and charm. If you’ve managed to get lost in the winding streets of Old Town, you’re doing it right!

Day One
Start off your morning with some coffee from Java Sun. With multiple coffees to choose from, you’ll see why it is a local favorite. The kids behind the counter are always cheerful, and make sure to try the cinnamon rolls or croissants (butter, ham and cheese, or spinach and feta)! Then stroll around (new) downtown on Atlantic Avenue. Shops like Irresistibles and Liz Steinfield offer excellent shopping, and Shubie’s is a veritable treasure trove of wine, cheese and other delicious treats. They’re almost always having some kind of tasting! In the afternoon, head down to Devereaux Beach. While it is a somewhat rocky beach, it is a local favorite due to the pristine water, the playground, restrooms, parking lot and, most importantly, Lime Rickey’s. This is no regular beach shack – try their shrimp tacos!! In the evening, stroll down to Crocker Park or Ft. Sewall. Don’t be alarmed if you hear cannons firing at sunset! That’s just the local yacht clubs lowering their flags. (And yes, you’ll likely hear cannons throughout any summer weekend; there are constant regattas just off Marblehead Harbor). For dinner, head to The Barnacle for some of the best views in town, and for one of the best lobster rolls in the country. It’s a dive, for sure, but totally worth it!

Day Two
Start your morning at Haley’s in (old) downtown on Washington Street. Enjoy their incredible rock cakes and grab a coffee to go. Hit the downtown shops (Madam Had’Em, French + Italian and F.L. Woods are my faves!) and then wander through Old Town. You’ll see that almost every house is historic (mine, for example, was built in the 1650’s), and all offer serious New England charm. Get a little lost, wander by the cemeteries and make up some ghost stories, and just marvel at the collection of antique homes. Be sure to stop by Abbot Hall and check out The Spirit of ’76! Later, drive over to Marblehead Neck and stroll through the songbird sanctuary, or hit up the lighthouse at Chandler Hovey Park for more spectacular harbor views. (The harbor has somewhere around ~2000 boats in it during the summer!) On your way out of town, stop at Five Corners for dinner; this chic restaurant offers house-made charcuterie and beautiful cocktails, winning over even the snootiest Manhattan diners.

A SOAK in the Tub

I’m usually not one for bath-and-body-type stores, but during last month’s trip to Newburyport, I found a serious exception to that rule. Soak is so much more than a soap store– it’s this crazy fun little oasis… smack in the middle of downtown Newburyport, yet it feels like you just walked into some amazing combination of coastal spa and well-loved beach house.

The Newburyport Soap Bar, it is certainly home to its fair share of soaps [but really, it has a 20-foot soap bar full of handmade glycerin soaps ^^], yet so many other treasures that will, no joke, make your baths and showers EVENTS to look forward to.

Sugar Scrubs:: It’s like going to your favorite self-serve fro-yo place and picking out whatever flavor you want… just don’t eat these?

Shower Steamers:: As water splashes these little nuggets, the oils are activated + released, giving the most amazing scent to your shower steam. Lilac, Lemongrass, Lavender… mmmmm….

Loungewear: I was SO excited to spot Paxton1345 boxers at Soak, and even more excited to hear that they’ll be expanding their loungewear collection, as they open their new addition to the store in a couple weeks!

Men’s Skin Care:: Admit it guys, you need some goodies too. Soak carries Jack Black products [fragrance-free, colorant-free, cruelty-free and dermatologist tested], as well as Plum Island Soap Co.’s best-selling Man Can [SUCH a good gift idea for your dad, brother, or guy!].

Not pictured:: Oh, about 4 billion other products, including but not limited to LaLicious body butters, Bath Bombs, Swedish Dream Sea Salt Soap, oils, scrubs, lotions, bath robes, candles, teas, and other coastal gifts [not for your body but good for your heart].

A Day by the Sea: Newburyport

People often ask me what my favorite thing about living in Boston is. This may seem counterintuitive, but I absolutely love that I can enjoy the hustle & bustle of this crazy fun city, but as often as I want, I can escape it. New England is full of hidden gems of coastal towns, and we make is a priority to fit as many day trips as we can into the good-weather weekends.

Last weekend, the lovely ladies of New England Development sent BF and I on a mini trip to Newburyport, up on Massachusett’s North Shore. Less than an hour from Boston, it is perfect for an easy, quick little escape from the city. The town has plenty to offer to fill a day, and it was so hard for us to leave at the end of it!

I don’t know how I’m going to fit everything into one post [in fact, I won’t:: you can find Plum Island Lighthouse here, and a post on the darling Soak shop is coming soon!], so bear with me through this extensive photo diary!

Plum Island Coffee Roasters:: Fuel for the day!
Iced coconut coffee in Adirondak chairs overlooking the harbor. Please, I beg you, tell me something better than that. I could have sat here all morning! Such charm– you can tell this is a place that tourists know they’re supposed to flock to, but that locals know is truly the best.

Riverside Yoga + Massage
I grew up with some yoga as a part of my dance training, but I can count the number of times I’ve been to an actual yoga class on one hand [let’s be real– two fingers]. But the Slow Flow session was such a relaxing, and yet fun, start to my morning, and co-owner/instructor Rebecca made me feel so comfortable.
Just recently opened, it’s a truly beautiful, calming space [check out this lighting y’all]. They’re currently offering new students 2 weeks of unlimited classes for $30– let’s see your neighborhood yoga studio beat that!

Madox:: Time to shop!
But of course I couldn’t stay that yoga-calm forever– I had to get my shopping on. We stopped by Madox [their Newburyport location is brand new!], an awesome women’s boutique with incredible variety and a price point to boot [most expensive dress in the store right now is $80]. Outfits for just about any occasion, and TONS of accessories, shoes, bags, and jewelry to match.

Owner Matt Khatib has been designing jewelry for over 20 years [he started learning with his grandfather!], and it shows. Yet M.K. Benatti is not your stiff, snooty old jewelry store– his jewelers really make you feel welcome and at ease. Forget that BF didn’t pick out my engagement ring there– they still cleaned it and showed us wedding bands to match [or customize!].

But this is not a store for diamonds only; Matt carries an overwhelming selection of beautiful, nautical pieces that completely encompass the style of Newburyport [not to mention my own!]. AND Cape Cod bracelets– number one on my wish list right now!

Michael’s Harborside:: Lunch with a View
This was everything I love about my favorite hometown restaurant— the view, the atmosphere, the drinks– except with actual amazing food! I think it took us about half an hour to decide what to order, and I was thoroughly pleased with the decisions– White Sangria, Lobster Roll, and–no joke–the best Fish & Chips I think I’ve ever had.

Plum Island Lighthouse

1 // Lighthouses [#shocker]
I would like to disclose that I very, very rarely buy full-price Lilly Pulitzer [read my post on how to find Lilly for less here!]. But when I caught a glimpse of the upcoming Watch Out print [inspired by Watch Hill, Rhode Island] back in early spring, I started saving my pennies to snag this lighthouse-printed shift asap.

I wore it this past weekend on our trip to Newburyport [more on that coming soon!] and Plum Island, home of Plum Island Light//Newburyport Harbor Lighthouse. First built in 1788 and with the current tower dating back to 1898, this one’s another old sport. We didn’t happen to visit on a date in which the lighthouse was open to the public, but it will be from 1-4pm on a few select Sundays this year! More info here.

I am so very pleased and excited to introduce you all to an incredible new company and brand today. If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you may have picked up on the fact that I am a huge fan of local businesses and American-made products. Oh, and a huge fan of shoes.

Enter New England Outerwear. Started by two locals, Greg Cordeiro and Dan Heselton, this is the company bringing shoe manufacturing back to New England— Massachusetts specifically was the largest producer of footwear in the world at one point, and these two are passionate about making that happen once more! Says Greg, “we want to bring that story back to New England.”

The great grandchildren of tannery owners, Greg and Dan are focused on 100% made-in-the-USA product. Their shoes are currently manufactured in Lewiston, Maine by veterans of the industry with 30+ years experience. “We love what we do and we love where we are from, so we thought it ought to be fitting to be inspired from generations past in the oldest part of the country.”

New England Outerwear is passionate about creating high-quality products, ones that stand the test of the harsh New England climate. Though they may be investment pieces, the quality is superior, and this is a pair of shoes that I am positive is long-lasting. “The goal is to make them last your lifetime and maybe even pass them on if you can.”

The men’s line has been around for a couple seasons now, boasting boat shoes, boots, mocassins, loafers, and oxfords for footwear, plus belts and hats.

Women’s shoes are new to the game though, with my boat shoes [above] and braided mocassins being first on board.

Next spring they’ll be launch a full apparel and outwear line, for both men and women. To say I’m excited for this is probably the understatement of the year…!

Where can you buy these beauties? Gentlemen, you can head over to The Tannery in Boston, but ladies— you can try them on in person at the darling Thistle Hill in Rockport. For anyone out of the area, you can definitely purchase your pair online, and they will be custom-made just for your order.
