The Day Trip Diaries: Portland, ME via Amtrak Downeaster

Last fall, MJF and I headed to Portland, Maine for the [very fabulous, might I add] wedding of his two cousins. We made a stop for Portland Head Light [shocking], but beyond that didn’t have much in the way of time to explore the little city. So when Amtrak Downeaster offered to send me up there for the day, I cleared our schedule and booked those tickets faster than you can say lobstah with buttah.

It is stupid easy to get to Portland from Boston– just a two-hour ride from North Station on the Amtrak Downeaster train. And to quckly interject, those collective 4 or so ours spent on a train in one day? Most relaxing 4 hours I’ve had in the last two months. Considering booking another trip up there STAT for the ride alone. This is also probably a sign that I’m having stress and workaholic issues but we’ll just give the credit to the train’s comfy seating arrangements instead.

One of my best galfriends from college is a Maineiac and played tour guide for the day, so I’m giving you only the most local-approved suggestions.

We were crazy spoiled with good weather this day, not even a need for an overcoat. But, being the season, it was a perfect day to put this new J.Jill forest green buttoned back pullover to use. In hindsight, I’m rocking a bordering extremely unflattering farm boy look with these boyfriend jeans, but at least I’ve got that cozy chic top business working for me.

when:: I’m pretty sure there isn’t a bad time of year to visit Portland, but if you take the train just a stop further to Freeport, you’ll be in Christmas shopping heaven, so there’s an argument for visiting in November or December!

Nantucket in the Fall

We’ve done it in 90 degrees. We’ve done it in a blizzard. And now, on a slightly more normal scale, we can say we’ve done Nantucket in the fall.

Yeah. While you all packed your bags and drove toward Western Mass foliage or the New Hampshire mountains, we hopped on a Hy-Line ferry for an autumn jaunt to ACK. And I kind-of-really-highly suggest you do too.

Top 10 Reasons to Visit Nantucket in the Fall::

1 // Everything is on sale. Everything.
2 // The hotel rates are unbeatable– this is your chance to book where you may not necessarily be able to afford in high season. We stayed at the Jared Coffin House, but The White Elephant also comes highly recommended.
3 // NO. CROWDS. And the island really feels more like a community than a standing-room-only tourist destination. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that at least 70 percent of our fellow ferry passengers knew each other.
4 // But, things are still open, at least downtown. Not every restaurant, not every store, but a good chunk of them– I didn’t pass one business that I felt like I was missing out on, and we had no shortage of options. Just be aware that as the fall goes on, less and less stay open 7 days a week; your best bet is visiting Friday-Sunday.
5 // Cisco Brewer’s Pumple Drunkin.
6 // The chilly temperatures outside mean there’s no reason to feel guilty about cozying up for a flick in the Starlight Theatre instead of making it a beach day.
7 // Christmas Stroll! The first full weekend of December marks this Nantucket tradition, when most of the seasonal stores and restaurants reopen for business.
8 // The red wine list at Nantucket Prime. I reserve reds for October through February only.
9 // To support a small seasonal community.
10 // You can take photos of all the bourgeois’ immaculate summer homes and not feel like a total creep since they all left the island on Labor Day.

As far as I’m concerned, the only negative was no hydrangeas in bloom. But I guess it’s not fair to consider that a deal breaker.

DD Fall Instameet + Introducing:: Pumpkin Macchiato

I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.

What do you get when you mix pumpkin picking, a fall foliage drive, unpredictable weather, and Dunkin’ Donuts?

The most New England day everrrrr.

I had such an awesome time visiting Hanson’s Farm in Framingham, MA with the Dunkin Donuts team earlier this month for their first Instameet! Camera phones were up and at ’em as we explored the farm, took one of their regionally famous hayrides [which turn haunted at night!], and met with the DD culinary team to learn about their new fall beverages.

By now I’m sure a lot of you have heard about the new pumpkin macchiato, but have you tried this masterpiece? Bliss. Served hot or cold [I will drink iced coffee until December, at the earliest], it’s a layered espresso drink, made with steamed milk and pumpkin swirl, and topped with a double shot of freshly brewed espresso. Gimme gimme, gimme gimme more.

Since I tend to reject seasonal changes for as long as possible, you can bet I’ll be sipping on these for at least another month or so. Pumpkin season ain’t over yet guys, but get them while you can!

Cozied Up on Nantucket with Milly & Grace

We just got back from the best little weekend jaunt to Nantucket thanks to some of my friends at NE Development, and I tell ya– taking even just one day off work and getting out of the city can do wonders for a fall slump.

I’m excited to share a fall-on-ACK travel and shopping guide with you soon [gotta get you prepped for Christmas Stroll!], but for now, a quick outfit from the weekend, featuring a new ruana (which I happen to be wearing wrong) (which I shouldn’t have admitted to you) from one of the most darling stores ~~on Nantucket~~ ever, Milly & Grace.

Milly & Grace is a confluence of owner Emily Ott Hollister’s two grandmothers’ styles– sassy Milly and sweet Grace. Anyone who knows me could walk in this store and see why it’s a place in which I feel right at home– preppy and feminine dresses, delicate but colorful jewelry, whimsical gifts and home accessories, and the prettiest displays and dressing rooms. It’s vintage-inspired, yet fresh and cheery.

Humble brag, but this ruana made me feel chic AF.

The Daytrip Diaries: Portsmouth, NH

We really made a point to squeeze every minute out of summer this year.

As excited as we were for our Eurotrip, we knew that the leaves would have turned and the temperatures would have dropped by the time we returned at the end of September. So instead of being responsible adults and packing and planning for 10 days overseas, we hopped in the car on our last real Saturday of summer and drove up to Portsmouth, NH to send off our New England summer.

Portsmouth is one of those towns everyone has been telling me I’d love for years; yet embarrassingly and admittedly, this was my first time there. And now I get why y’all have been bugging me about it for so long. The houses! The city along the seacoast! The outdoor ~~drinking~~ dining!

I’ve always thought that people who walk around gardens taking a million photos of flowers are on the same level as crazy cat ladies, but that was me in Prescott Park. Are crazy flower ladies a thing? Because I guess I’m turning into one.

And as I’m sure you’ve guessed, photos don’t even begin to do the trial gardens justice.

Oh, and, there was a lighthouse.

Unsurprising since its coastline is teeny tiny, Portsmouth Harbor Light is New Hampshire’s only mainland lighthouse. The fact that it’s currently maintained by the Coastguard makes getting to it as much fun as seeing it; these guys don’t take 90% of their visitors being middle-aged tourists as an excuse to take security lightly, and I haven’t been that nervous about stepping off a guided line since I was under 21 in an Atlantic City casino.

But if you’re visiting, don’t fret. Keep your head down, mouth shut, and follow the signs and the path. There is a LIGHT at the end of the ~~fort~~ tunnel har har har.

who:: We should really just nix this line from the questionnaire because by now you all must know that the only person I can get to accompany me on these trips is my husband, as none of my friends want to wait for me to Instagram their food before they can start eating it, or sneak through Coast Guard stations and trample through Revolutionary War-era forts to see lighthouses. MJF doesn’t appreciate this either, but he’s now legally bound.
what:: I’m not saying it’s a metropolis, but it’s a city goshdarnit, and there’s no shortage of things to do. While I know many of you may be happy wandering gardens or strolling streets and taking photos of innocent neighbor’s nautical doorknockers for hours just like I am, there’s also countless harborside restaurants, shops in Market Square, coffee shops, museums, and music venues.
when:: We wrapped up summer in Portsmouth, but there’s nothing like that New Hampshire fall foliage…
where:: Nauti home gifts and souvenirs for all ages at Tugboat Alley, afternoon brews at Portsmouth Brewery, seafood and cocktails on the deck at River House, ice cream at Annabelle’s.

The North Shore (Part Two)

For all intensive purposes, we have reached the end of summer. Bittersweet, as there is no time in New England quite as joyful as summer, though autumn here is such a treat as well. Continuing with our North Shore tour guide, here are mini guides (from local residents and fellow bloggers!) to three Massachusetts towns north of the city that each boast merits for visiting in both the summer and the fall: Salem, Newburyport, and Marblehead.

Lianna, Salem Style

No matter what time of year it is, you can enjoy a beautiful day in Salem, Massachusetts! You do not need a car to visit Salem– there’s a commuter rail stop right downtown, and there is a Salem ferry that leaves right from downtown Boston! A Salem morning is not complete without breakfast at Red’s. With endless cups of coffee and pancakes that are bigger than the plate, you are sure to start your day off right. Or if you are more of a grab-and-go type, visit A&J King bakery for a hot and fresh chocolate croissant.

Rain or shine, Salem has a lot to offer downtown. Since Salem is the “witch city,” taking a trip to the Witch Museum or the Salem Witch Dungeon is usually on the top of the to-do list. For non-witch activities, visit the House of Seven Gables or the Peabody Essex Museum.

Ready for lunch? Consider Scratch Kitchen (especially if you love bacon) and The Lobster Shanty. Find the perfect hostess gift at Pamplemousse or the perfect vintage dress at Modern Millie. Or bring a little magic back to your home from HausWitch. For an afternoon treat, stop by Melita Fiore for some macarons.

If you are staying overnight, check in to the Salem Waterfront Hotel or the historic Hawthorne Hotel. Enjoy dinner with a water view at Victoria’s Station or downtown at Opus, and be sure to check out Opus Underground while you’re there. Salem is such a great city to explore!

Christine, Rules for the Modern Girl

Headed up to Newburyport? Start your day with an iced coffee and pastries at Plum Island Roasters. Take it to go and head over to State Street to pop into all of the fun shops– pick up tea at Best of British, cozy pajamas and luxury soaps at Soak Shoreline, and quirky, American-made gifts at Skowhegan Dry Goods.

In need of a coffee refill? Grab a cup at Atomic Cafe before heading over to AliKat on Pleasant Street for the latest in women’s fashions and accessories. For the best tacos you’ll ever have (seriously!) stop in at Dos Amigos for lunch. Feeling adventurous? Schedule a kayak or SUP tour at Plum Island Kayak and get a view of Newburyport from the water. For dinner, celebrate a fun day out with champagne and oysters at the best restaurant in town, Brine Oyster!

M A R B L E H E A D

Kristen, The Boston Fashionista

Marblehead is such an easy, walkable town that is filled with history and charm. If you’ve managed to get lost in the winding streets of Old Town, you’re doing it right!

Day One
Start off your morning with some coffee from Java Sun. With multiple coffees to choose from, you’ll see why it is a local favorite. The kids behind the counter are always cheerful, and make sure to try the cinnamon rolls or croissants (butter, ham and cheese, or spinach and feta)! Then stroll around (new) downtown on Atlantic Avenue. Shops like Irresistibles and Liz Steinfield offer excellent shopping, and Shubie’s is a veritable treasure trove of wine, cheese and other delicious treats. They’re almost always having some kind of tasting! In the afternoon, head down to Devereaux Beach. While it is a somewhat rocky beach, it is a local favorite due to the pristine water, the playground, restrooms, parking lot and, most importantly, Lime Rickey’s. This is no regular beach shack – try their shrimp tacos!! In the evening, stroll down to Crocker Park or Ft. Sewall. Don’t be alarmed if you hear cannons firing at sunset! That’s just the local yacht clubs lowering their flags. (And yes, you’ll likely hear cannons throughout any summer weekend; there are constant regattas just off Marblehead Harbor). For dinner, head to The Barnacle for some of the best views in town, and for one of the best lobster rolls in the country. It’s a dive, for sure, but totally worth it!

Day Two
Start your morning at Haley’s in (old) downtown on Washington Street. Enjoy their incredible rock cakes and grab a coffee to go. Hit the downtown shops (Madam Had’Em, French + Italian and F.L. Woods are my faves!) and then wander through Old Town. You’ll see that almost every house is historic (mine, for example, was built in the 1650’s), and all offer serious New England charm. Get a little lost, wander by the cemeteries and make up some ghost stories, and just marvel at the collection of antique homes. Be sure to stop by Abbot Hall and check out The Spirit of ’76! Later, drive over to Marblehead Neck and stroll through the songbird sanctuary, or hit up the lighthouse at Chandler Hovey Park for more spectacular harbor views. (The harbor has somewhere around ~2000 boats in it during the summer!) On your way out of town, stop at Five Corners for dinner; this chic restaurant offers house-made charcuterie and beautiful cocktails, winning over even the snootiest Manhattan diners.

The North Shore (Part One):: Rockport, MA

Despite having close ties to the South Shore of Massachusetts, the mister and I have developed a real love for the North Shore as well. I’m bringing you a mini series featuring guides to some of our favorite places up there, written by residents and fellow bloggers of each seaside town! We’re kicking off with Jen (@rockportgirl)’s weekend guide to Rockport– a town that really deserves more than a day trip if you can swing it…

At the tip of Cape Ann, often called “the other Cape,” lies the quaint New England seaside village of Rockport…

DAY 1

Start your day in the heart of the town at Brothers Brew for coffee and “Cape Ann’s Best Donuts.” From there you are centrally located to enjoy all of Rockport’s many boutique shops and art galleries– most of which are independently owned and many multi-generational.

Bearskin Neck, the narrow piece of town that juts into the ocean, provides the perfect stroll for sightseeing, people watching, and shopping. At the beginning of the Neck, stop into Wicked Peacock for the most unique jewelry and accessories. Further down, you can watch local artists at work in their studio and gallery at The Art Nook. At the historic Pewter Shop, you’ll find everything from locally made charms and ornaments to kitchen accessories. Bearskin Neck Leathers features leather shoes and other goods for men and women. The end of the Neck provides spectacular views of Sandy Bay– take a seat on a granite bench and enjoy the breeze.

Up for a quick kayak or paddle boarding around the harbor? North Shore Kayak on Tuna Wharf just off Bearskin is open 7 days a week.

Head back down the Neck for lunch in the rough on the back deck of Roy Moore Lobster Company where the special of the day is always lobster (BYOB and a lobster cracker for those in the know!).

Save some room for ice cream at The Ice Cream Store, housed in an old fishing shack and quite possibly the world’s cutest ice cream store with the best view.

Next, onto the very tip of Rockport and Halibut Point State Park. You’ll the history of Rockport’s famous quarry industry while taking in the amazing ocean views and walking trails around the quarry.

Yes, there is an abundance of seafood to be had in Rockport and you will want to get your fresh lobster fill! But few places have the sunset location like The Lobster Pool. Located just around the corner from Halibut State Park on the Gloucester border, this is a BYOB, picnic table, sunset viewing haven.

Tucked away on the shore between town and Halibut State Point is the historic grand hotel the Emerson Inn by the Sea. With oceanview rooms, it’s a quiet reprise from the day’s events.

DAY 2

Up for a sunrise? The Headlands, located at the end of Atlantic Ave, is a rocky outcropping overlooking the harbor downtown. Watch the boats sailing out for the day and an artist or two set up to paint the stunning view.

Fuel up at Helmut’s Strudel Shop back on Bearskin Neck with an iced cappuccino and a piece of warm strudel while seated on the outdoor deck overlooking the harbor.

A fixture in town since 1929, Tuck’s Candies has two locations, doubling your chance to stock up on homemade saltwater taffy and all sorts of chocolate-covered goodies.

Spend the day at one of the town’s most accessible beaches, Front Beach, a small crescent beach just outside of town. Calm water (and actual bathrooms!) make this beach popular with families and tourists. Swim out to the floating raft for views of town.

Right across the street from Front Beach is Nate’s. Step up to the surf shack-like takeout window where you can order everything from fried clams to cheeseburgers. For a break from the sun, take your lunch into the adjoining Millbrook Meadow and dine on the grass by the stream. After lunch, stroll through this hidden gem of a park and check out the dam and old Mill House.

Back to the Emerson for a quick shower and then its off to dinner before your show at the Shalin Liu Performance Center. A stay in Rockport is not complete without a show at this stunning recently-opened building. Acoustically perfect and with a stage that features a wall of windows with the ocean behind it, the center was built especially for summer night concerts.

TIP // Rockport is still a “dry town,” (no liquor stores), but a few places in town are BYOB, so stock up in Gloucester on your way in!

The Daytrip Diaries: Little Compton

For the last eight years, probably more, I haven’t dreamed of living anywhere besides Massachusetts.

~~Maybe with the exception of London 🙂~~

But a few trips to Rhode Island this summer have put me in near danger of having an affair with the Ocean State. We had the best day in the sweet town of Little Compton a few weeks ago, driving around the harbor, visiting a local farmers’ market, and stumbling onto a vineyard. I wouldn’t say it’s walking town–very few shops and restaurants in a confined area–but if you have a car, it’s the best mix of rural and seaside.

Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard was the highlight of the day. We drove by a sign and figured we’d check it out, assuming we’d run into a small tasting room and wine shop and maybe a daily tour or two.

False. This place was bumpin’. We drove up to live jazz music on the lawn, picnic lunches and wine flowing. Didn’t even bother with a tasting because we had so much fun wandering the grounds and lounging in the sun with glasses of their Sacred Rosé and Rhode Island Red. Next time we’re definitely bringing some cheese & blankets and buying a bottle.

[ travel summary ]
who:: You’re all invited on my next trip to Sakonnet Vineyard at least. That place is just screaming for a rosé-by-day party.
what:: Despite its tiny size, I could have driven circles around this gorgeous area for hours. Visit on a sunny day, and get out of the car whenever possible. And drink wine, did I mention that? [Just assign a designated driver!! #thankshubs]
when:: I’ve been gushing about how much I love this state to just about ever RI resident I’ve met recently, and the unanimous response they have given is, “yeah, it’s really great this time of year.” So I’m going to go ahead and guess they suggest summer too.
where:: Coffee + art at the incredible little tucked-away Art Cafe. Sit-down lunch at The Commons Lunch or sandwiches and Del’s to go at Wilma’s at Walkers. Wine, music, and food at Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard. We didn’t make it there, but have heard nothing but good things about Sakonnet Garden as well.

Eastern Point Lighthouse

Eastern Point Lighthouse :: Gloucester, MA

Established in 1829 and rebuilt in 1890, this beauty—which welcomes you to Gloucester Harbor—sits on a jetty, so I was in love before we even arrived. We could have sat out here all afternoon, and next time you know I’m bringing a picnic + some sangria with me.

Don’t let the “private drive” // security guard at the entrance street intimidate you—as long as you keep driving past the bougey mansions, the lighthouse is public and there’s a pay lot at the end of the road.

Nantucket Basket Purse

These sweet babies have been around for 150 years, when lightship workers would weave them to pass their time aboard whaling ships. They’ve been known as Nantucket Lightship Baskets, Nantucket Friendship Baskets, whatever they’re called, they’re a symbol of the island. Class dismissed.

This purse has been passed around my family, a gift from my mother to my grandmother and then back down to me, and it’s one of those quick-there’s-a-fire-what-items-do-you-save most treasured possessions of mine. #cheese
