These Boots Were Made for Summer

I always thought using your iced coffee as a prop was the most ridiculous blogger gimmick ever. But then these photos were unplanned and taken spur of the moment during a summer evening stroll and I just apparently didn’t think to put down my ~~crack~~ MaryLou’s and now I am one of said ridiculous cliche bloggers.

IN OTHER NEWS, wanted to chat briefly about my fun new boots that I just couldn’t wait until fall to pull out!

I’ve been on the hunt for brown booties since like, last fall. So it only makes sense that I’d find them just as we enter open-toe season. But I was so excited about this pair from White Mountain, with the fun tassel zipper, that I couldn’t wait until actual boot season to pull them out! In true White Mountain fashion, they are SO comfortable. I’d think that they were too good to be true, but this pair sure wasn’t.

hey! spring!

The [almost]-seventy degree temps this past weekend meant one thing: I was hitting the Harborwalk! I usually pop on in the North End and walk all the way to Seaport, so the walk requires two things: nice weather [check!], and comfortable shoes!

The team at White Mountain [they’re based in New England– hey local!] sent me these super comfy catamaran sandals, and I couldn’t wait to break them out for one of our first days of sandal weather. I walked hours in them and didn’t get one blister! They also come in Natural and I am definitely not contemplating getting them in a second color or anything…

Nantucket in the Winter // Part Three: Exploring the Frozen Island

We spent the second half of our weekend on Nantucket bundled up for exploring the island. I didn’t have the highest hopes for even making it to the East side, where Sankaty Head Lighthouse + the sweet village of ‘Sconset lie, but we fell into some extreme luck + happened to stay at an inn whose owner was in town and all over taking us on a jeep tour around the island, allowing us to see so much more than I expected [another point for the Centerboard Inn!].

Built in 1850, this is another oldie! Like Gay Head Lighthouse on Martha’s Vineyard, Sankaty Head is falling victim to erosion; it has already been moved back once [400 feet] from its original location on the eroding bluff. You may be familiar with Cisco Brewers’ Sankaty Light Lager, and this sweet lighthouse is its namesake.

Back closer to town on the North side of the island lies Steps Beach. Despite the wind chills we felt, there was something so calming and beautiful about the snow covering the sand. Almost makes me fall back in love with winter!

Holiday T-Straps & Travel (+ an UBER discount for you!)

Some years, even more exciting than picking out a holiday dress [or skirt or sweater!], is picking out festive shoes. I say, the more glitter, the better…!

The only downside to fun holiday party outfits + show-stopping shoes? The uncomfortable walks home. I’m a big fan of Uber all year round, but I especially take advantage of this taxi app during the busy holiday season when I can’t be bothered to wait for the unreliable Boston transit system, or when I need to splurge on a cab ride home to save my heels 🙂

Except here’s the kicker: Grabbing a taxi with Uber is not much of a splurge at all– I’ve easily saved money using it!

If you’re new to Uber, just know this: It’s a smartphone app that uses a GPS system to find you a cab closest to your current location. Registration is free, but you enter your credit card information from the start, so there is no actual money exchange during your ride. After your ride, your card will be charged [tip included!], and it rounds down to the nearest dollar. SEE-YA drivers who claim they can’t take cards– this is finally no longer a problem with Uber! Plus, sharing a cab with friends? There’s an easy fare-splitting option [this is news to me too!].

Uber is offering new riders a $15 credit(!) with code ShellChic13, and with extra minutes being sparse in during the holiday season, what better timing? Yes, I receive a credit if any of you sign up [the same commission every Uber rider receives for referrals], but pay or no pay, I can honestly say this is one of my top three favorite phone apps [it’s available for iPhone + Android!], and while it has saved me from a lot of Boston-specific transportation headaches, it’s available in tons of other cities all over the world as well.

Are you using Uber to save time and save your shoes? If no, seriously– why not?!

Scallops and the City

The best feeling after a long day at work and a hot commute home during the summer, is being able to climb up to my roof with a cold drink to sit and enjoy views like this. It’s so fun to catch it at Golden Hour, watching the sun set behind Old North Church.

Dress for Less: How to be an Online Shopping Pro

I’ve never had the desire to disclose anything as personal as my financial situation on this blog, but I realized recently that I may have a sort of responsibility to. I will be the first to admit that although I love my job, I do not receive an A-Lister salary. And so I’ve had to learn how to shop for the brands I love creatively, very rarely buying items at full price. It takes patience, but it can easily be done, so here are my tips for finding some of my most coveted brands for less. Take them as you will!

Sample Sale Websites
GILT was the pioneer in online sample sales, and Rue La La isn’t far behind. Lilly Pulitzer tends to pop up on Rue at least once or twice a month, if not as its own boutique then in specialty ones. I’ve also found Jack Rogers, Vineyard Vines, and Tory Burch on Rue La La, and I often find Kate Spade on GILT. You need invite codes to join, so here ya go— click below!

Resale Facebook Groups
It may sound funny (ok, sketchy), but these online trade markets are really no different from eBay (BuyItNow that is, not the bidding portion!). Luck and timing are always major factors in thrift shopping, and there’s no way around that. But when you succeed, it feels oh so good. For tips on thrifting in general, check out Megan’s post, which has been immensely helpful to me. If you’re in the Boston or NYC area, be sure to visit some Second Time Around storefronts (additional locations here). I’ve seen everything from Banana Republic and Vineyard Vines to Longchamp and Kate Spade. They are also constantly running sales and promos, so be sure to sign up for their emails.

Personal Online Shoppers
Shop It To Me is one of my best + worst discoveries: daily email alerts about sales on specific products in your size from brands you love. Example:: I fill out my profile with interests in J.Crew, Free People, Lilly Pulitzer, and Urban Outfitters, noting I’m interested in any women’s clothing//accessories//shoes, and my sizes. Result:: A daily digest full of items I might be interested in that have recently gone on sale— like this Free People dress half off on ShopBop.com.
Beso is newer, but works similarly. Create your style profile with your favorite brands and stores, and receive “My Sale Rack” emails as often as you’d like— once a week, just weekends, every day, up to you! There’s also a big social part of this program as well.

6PM
I don’t know what it is about this site, but 6pm.com consistently puts brands (ahemLillyPulitzer) on sale long before anyone else does. I’ll take these jeans please!

Retail Me Not
Never have I ever made a purchase online without checking first to see if someone has listed a coupon code that I may have missed on Retail Me Not. This girl very rarely pays for shipping. Fact.

End-of-Season Sales
Watch out for these guys, they have the capability to trump Black Friday sales. Jack Wills and Vineyard Vines (promo code:: SUMMER40) are running theirs now, and Lilly Pulitzer‘s will be in August. Anthropologie’s annual Tag Sale just ended, but they still have hundreds of fresh cuts. Kate Spade is also known to have numerous Friends & Family or Surprise Sales each season— never have I ever purchased a Kate Spade product full price thanks to these!

Email Alerts
These can be both a blessing and a curse, as sometimes it is just too hard to resist one of those 50% OFF EVERYTHING + FREE SHIPPING emails, even though I need to shop like I need a hole in the head. BUT they can be extremely helpful if you’re willing to hold out for something specific. Example A:: a pair of J.Crew shorts that I doubted I could live without popped up a few months ago, but no way was I paying $60 for them, so I promised myself I’d hold out. Sure enough, a few weeks later, J.Crew ran 40%-off-all-shorts-for-one-day-only promo, so I snatched them up. Proud moment.
