My whole life, my family has spent Augusts in a little harbor town on the south shore of Massachusetts, just down the road from a lighthouse. This past weekend, the town celebrated its annual Heritage Days, but it was especially exciting this year because that lighthouse that I grew up with, built in 1811, celebrates its 200th birthday this year! I thought it was the perfect excuse to wear my new Sailboat Skirt, courtesy of an Anthropologie second-cuts sale 🙂 
Heritage Days was also super special this year because, for the first time, we are actual residents of the town! Since I’ve been out of the house for a few years now and my little brother graduated high school in June and is on his way to college himself, my parents finally made the move to their dream town (and my mom’s Barbie Dream House… more features on that later). Heritage Weekend is filled with lots of music, food, and sidewalk sales, but my favorite part is Luminaria. To kick off the weekend, every resident along the harbor lines their property with luminaries on the Friday night.
It’s just as beautiful to me today as it has been for the last twenty some years of coming here, and I’m so glad we finally get to call this home.
Well, not me. I don’t think these culottes qualify.
If you’re a blogger I follow who has done a post on shorts this summer, then you’ve probably noticed from my comments how in love with them I am. I finally got my hands on this pair of Dragonfly Culottes from Anthropologie a few weeks ago, and I adore them. So soft and easy to throw on for a casual Friday.
I’m still on the hunt for lace ones, and now that the season is almost over I’m hoping to scour some on the sale racks. If you spot any, tips as to where I could as well would be greatly appreciated!
Also, started down pouring on my way home from work yesterday… had to take cover and where better to do so than an Anthro? Made it out with a couple great sale finds that I am so excited to show off, so look for them soon!
I have noticed a total lack of color in shoe stores lately. Don’t get me wrong, I love the nude pumps look and who can go resist neutral sandals and brown or black boots? But DSW and a number of other stores I went into last week were looking seriously dismal. So I thought we’d invite our friend Roy G. Biv over for today’s Tuesday Shoesday (and all finds are under $100!)…

The one good thing about the end of summer is sale time! And my favorite British outfitter, Jack Wills, is having a super sale.

I’m dying to get into a Jack Wills this weekend and see what other on sale goodies I can find. Now that’s easy for me to say since I live in New England where the only US locations are for now (besides The Hamptons), but never fear if you’re not in the area– JW offers totally free and quick shipping, and I have found through all of my purchases that things run very true to size, so I see no harm in a little online shopping…

I’ll tell you one thing: celebs seem to love it. In addition to Jessica Alba, Rhianna, Kim Kardashian, Cheryl Cole, and Camilla Belle have all been seen sporting this trend. Vogue and Marie Claire have also showcased it on recent covers.
To be honest, I didn’t love it at first. But when I found this purple skirt with orange details on sale for $30 at Free People, and I knew I had this tank from Anthropologie in burnt orange sitting in a drawer and only belonging to one other outfit, I thought, ok I can give this trend a try.
I complemented it with gold jewelry and black crochet TOMS to bring together the other black details in the skirt. The thing about this combo is the colors are so striking on their own, so I wouldn’t try to add a third unless it’s a neutral or black. There are also some specks of turquoise in the skirt, but I found that adding any more brights or bolds in shoes or accessories would be pushing it. After all, I’m still new to this color thing!

How were your weekends? Mine started off super hectic, as we had lots of visitors at the new house (and Puffy does not let visitors come to a dirty home!), but ended up very relaxing. On Thursday, the closest thing I’ve ever had to a little sister, Morgan of I Call it Lovely, came up to visit with her mama. She stayed in the city with me Thursday (I dragged her around apartment shopping and to dance class– what’s family for?), and then we spent the rest of the weekend at my parents’ house on the water.
We went out for seafood Saturday night and I finally got to use the gorgeous coral clutch she got me for my birthday. I loved how sharp the color looked against my white dress, and that’s what I had been waiting to use it with, but after seeing how Cupcakes and Cashmere paired hers, I know I need to be more adventurous with it. I figured out that it’s actually hard to find much that doesn’t go well with coral, especially in the summertime!
Having Morgan and her mom in town made me realize again how hard it’s going to be to not have my childhood home to go back to at holidays. We always have Christmas Eve with their family but now with the move it looks like we have new traditions to start! But like my mom said to Morgan’s, “those girls will always find their way back to each other.” And we will– love you sissy 🙂
