Sunny Shoulders

As if wearing white jeans after Labor Day wasn’t enough, here I am in white short short shorts on September 21st. I’m pretty sure cold shoulder tops were supposed to walk out the door about three weeks ago as well but ya know YOLO.

{I also just haven’t had time to switch out my seasonal under-the-bed storage if we’re being honest.}

White After Labor Day

No better way to welcome fall than with a little white dress after Labor Day, yeah?

This is pretty indicative of the summer I’ve had. I’ve found myself about six weeks behind on everything {these photos may or may not have been taken in ~~late~~ early July}. I wore white jeans for the first time all summer last weekend, and I know I’m going to be pulling out the boots and sipping on the pumpkin spice about six weeks later than you all too.

BUT I’m excited to make my grand return to this lil space. I’ve got a lot to tell ya about–including a new addition to an already favorite restaurant of mine, a couple off-season travel guides, and a guide to making your summer wardrobe fall AF.

And hey. The good news is, this dress is marked down to $26. So there are some perks to my tardiness.

Underdressed and Overexposed

As I know you’ve heard me mention once or twice before or eight times before, this summer has been one of our busiest yet, up until right about now. Trains and planes and automobiles. Weddings and birthdays and never-ending weekends. Suits and heels and taffeta dresses.

Now we’re heading into an oddly quiet month with a fairly open calendar and I am READY to sleep in. To have an unplanned beach day. To have time to make coffee at home. And to ditch the planned-to-a-T function wardrobe and put on a friggin’ bathing suit and some shorts like its actually summertime.

We did finally get one quiet morning, even if just for a couple hours, a few weeks ago during our stay at Wequassett. Waking up and throwing on a bikini and some beach shorts is what summer should be. I chatted a bit about HIHO already here, and being a beach-based company, they really do know a thing or two about dressing for the season. This outfit, albeit as casual as can be, is the definition of what Cape Cod clothing should be.

Scalloped & Striped

What’s your summer?

Mine’s a lobster roll and a dark & stormy.
Hearing Scituate’s yacht club shoot off their cannon every night at sundown.
Picking up Marylou’s right before driving over the Sagamore bridge.
Contemplating every ice cream flavor on Dribbles’s menu, even though I know I’ll always end up back at my coffee frappe.
Broken in Jack Rogers.
Finding sand even in our city apartment.
Refusing to wear pants no matter how much the temperature drops.

It’s a cozy beach sweater and a beach bag that I–let’s be honest–never really clean out until Labor Day.

This is my Cape Cod uniform–a light linen pullover to cozy up in with coffee on the porch in the morning, or for a nighttime beach stroll. And shorts, because, their lifespan is quite fleeting as far as my closet is concerned. July & August and then back in the vault they go y’all.

I’ve recently fallen in love with Caribbean-based brand HIHO clothing through my work at In the Pink. We sell their crazy comfy sweaters, dresses, linen shorts, and uh-dorable nautical accessories at Resort and Shift on Nantucket, and I’ve been stocking up on weekend wear. From one island to another!

Emmi Kate Does Ellie Kai

Ellie Kai is one brand that has yet to fail me.

This is one of the comfiest maxi dresses I own. This receives more compliments than anything I think I’ve ever worn. Now this Ellie Kai dress–Kristin–from their new summer collection, has made its way into my suitcase for every weekend trip we’ve had since Memorial Day, and that’s–count ’em–three. Not to mention a bridal luncheon in the city too.I’m not playing favorites or anything.

If you haven’t heard me gush about this brand before, you may not know that one of its best features is its emphasis on customization. Pick your favorite style in your favorite print, sure. But then choose the length. Pockets. Exposed zipper. COLOR of the zipper! Made-to-order is not just a marketing phrase; it’s how these gals do.

I didn’t realize until this crazy month of travel, though, how revolutionary the idea of no-wrinkle fabric is. Right off the plane and into an Uber to rehearsal dinner? Easy. Post-wedding brunch Sunday morning? No hungover ironing required. Where. Have. I. Been? Oh right, taking my third shower so I can steam everything in my suitcase. No-wrinkle summer dresses belong in every woman’s closet is the moral of this story.

Most recently the beauty featured here served me during our stay down the Cape at Wequassett {can’t wait to tell ya more about that later!}. The sweet spotted coral print? Can’t get enough. Not your cup of tea? Choose from t-h-i-r-t-y other options instead!

Drop It Like It’s Hot

I’ll be the first to admit that I have a weakness-bordering-dangerous-obsession for blue & white dresses {spotted here + here + here, among elsewhere}.

Here’s the kicker. While I’m very aware of the no-white-to-any-bridal-activities rule, it didn’t hit me until one frazzled morning about a week ago, how few of my day dresses are entirely absent of white. Like. That’s as in if it’s not blue and white it’s probably not mine.

So here I am with another that fits the bill–a yummy Houndstooth Drop Waist Flounce Dress–just waiting and wishing for an occasion to wear it that doesn’t include a ceremony, gift registry bingo, or penis straws!

Set for Summer

I was buying a billowy, trapezey dress in a boutique recently, and when the 19-year-old sales associate complimented me on my choice and told me it was “so flattering on,” I had to laugh because said dress could not have been flattering on anyone except maybe this lady. {But girlfriend was well-trained!}

But reason #483 why I fail at being a #fashionblogger:: Sometimes you buy what makes you happy, and not what makes you look like a supermodel. Give me allllllll the adorable two-piece sets this summer, even if they make me look like I’m ready for bed. The Mint Julep Boutique sent me this pair & I will most certainly be going back for more…!

Trendy is the Last Stage Before Tacky

I’ve fallen into the trap of trends worse than ever this spring. Tassels! Poms! Metallic mirrored sunnies! I’m a walking cliche, right down to the bare shoulders [which hey surprise attract sunburns more than ever as I’ve learned the hard way].

I’m gonna give myself a one-time pass on boarding the trend-train this spring, only because it wasn’t that I was tryyyying to follow a crowd. I was merely emotionally invested in The Bachelor, and I saw Lauren Bushnell wearing off-the-shoulder tops and flip flops, so I bought off-the-shoulder tops and flip flops.

Don’t know who everyone else stole the idea from.

Vitamin Sea

After a week of freezing, cliche April showers, we caught a break in the eye of the storm and spent a weekend down in lil’ Rhode Island. Thanks to a 1:30 ferry time, we had a morning to ourselves to explore the southeastern tip of the state, featuring–duh–Point Judith Lighthouse and Del’s. What more do you really need in a daytrip?

I’ll tell ya a little more about this jaunt away next week, but because you asked(?), my ferry outfit::

I feel like every year I continue to find a spring transition jacket I love more than the last, and this FatFace UK raincoat takes the trophy for 2016. The sun may have come out of hiding for a couple days, but we’re still costing with a toasty high of 52°, and this fun navy toggle coat gets the job done.
