And speaking of the season, more important than any Christmas dress, ugly sweater choice, or personal wish list is the idea of giving back this holiday. My dear friend is a child life specialist at a pediatric hospital in D.C., and is working on an incredibly selfless program for the families of her patients. She has created this Amazon wish list full of very simple items that could make a great deal of difference. Any little bit you can offer helps. Caring for the needs of families requires that one be truly present to “be where your feet are” as a child life specialist once told me. This is especially true in a Pediatric hospital where often times one can be consumed by the sounds of ventilators, IV pumps beeping, and complex medical terminology. Four weeks ago, parents across our hospital found solace in a quiet room tucked away on the unit. There they joined in fellowship with one another, myself, and the Champlain. Over coffee, doughnuts, finger painting and coloring, parents, grandparents, and caretakers began to share a side of their stories not yet told. Their words and empathy, holding immense depth and comfort that can best be shared between individuals who truly understand what it means to have a sick child. The families at my hospital have requested the opportunity to come together once a week over coffee and breakfast to share with one another the ups and downs of caring for their hospitalized child. In order to host coffee hour weekly, I need your HELP! Currently a budget does not exist for this program and without your support I will be limited in what I can provide to families. I have created an amazon wish list with various breakfast items that could be stored easily and provided to families each Friday morning.
