When it comes to choosing which items in my closet (or kitchen or pantry or entire house for that matter) to spend vs. save on, I’m stubborn. My husband gives me a hard time because every once in a while I’ll justify treating myself to a pricey handbag, but I won’t spend $7 on a pack of paper towels when I know I can get them somewhere else for $3.50. But in my defense, the reason I can sometimes do the former is in part because of many times doing the latter. Little by little, the savings add up.
Right now, the splurge on my radar is a killer New Year’s Eve dress. Two of our best friends are getting married (yes, to each other), so for the first time on NYE, I care about wearing something more than a $20 sequined bargain dress that I’m probably going to spill champagne on anyway. And I’m making a mini savings plan to get my hands on it.
That being said, I know there are a lot of you who will find that ridiculous. Who are more excited about saving for a vacation. Or a new car. Or 2-ply toilet paper! Or name-brand cereal! (always 1-ply and generic as far as my coupons and I are concerned). Who are more than happy to buy a one-night-only dress on clearance. And hey, no judgment! We’ve all got our eyes on different prizes.
So whether you’re saving or splurging on NYE this year, I’ve got your guide. And no matter WHAT you’re saving for, I suggest giving Capital One’s My Savings Goals tool a try. Set a goal and easily track your progress through the Capital One 360 website or app. Whether it’s a $200 dress or $2,000 vacation, here’s a simple way to keep that goal in sight. You input what you’re saving for, how much you want to save by when, and which account you’re saving in. The tool will then calculate how much you need to save each month, paycheck, or—in my case—week of December to reach your target by your goal date. You can set up push and email notifications to keep you even more in check. No more making goals and letting them fall by the wayside! And while it may seem silly to set up a savings plan for a piece of clothing, won’t you feel better when you achieve that goal knowing that it wasn’t an impulse purchase and something that will all too soon bring about a case of shopper’s remorse? Same goes for plane tickets, a new piece of furniture, an extravagant date night… no number is really too small to not be worth budgeting for.

Gorgeous picks! I haven’t even thought about what I’ll do this year for NYE, but I love to get a little bit more dressed up than usual for it.

You are not alone in your ways of splurging on certain items and totally skimping on others..I am completely the same way! Kitchen items should never have to cost so much 🙂 And great dress roundup – I’m all about the feathers this season! A modern spin on a classic LBD!
