As a blogger, I get to hear from a lot of great companies doing great things. Local designers, startups, ethical and green brands, nonprofits, #girlbosses… it’s a wonderful perk of this “job.”
Here’s a company that really spoke to me.
Starfish Project is a socially responsible jewelry company that employs post-trafficked women to make jewelry in Asia. Women who come to work there receive dignified employment, counseling, housing, and food. They are offered language acquisition, vocational training, and family education grants. Started in 2006 by Jenny McGee (who had seen first-hand the needs of women in exploitation), it has grown to three cities in Asia, reaching out to hundreds of women each year.
Though it may be a simple pearl necklace to you, it’s part of a bigger mission to restore hope in exploited women. Just read their stories.
