Salem Weekend Trials

salem pumpkins

Since I moved to Boston six falls ago, I don’t think I have let one Halloween season pass without taking a trip up to Salem. The ghost tours + costumes + witch shops + all are always a sight to see, but I’ve learned that the little town also has so much more to offer than tourist attractions. Sweet coffee shops, delicious cafes overflowing with fall beers and hot ciders, the Peabody Essex Museum, and quaint streets away from the crowds.

How Do You Like Them Apples?

nashoba winery apple picking

And then we finally went apple picking and all of my fall dreams came true.

We tried Nashoba Winery this year, and despite the damp + overcast day and pretty picked-over trees, I had such a blast. At just about any orchard, when all else fails, you can at least sit down for an apple cider doughnut. But at Nashoba, when all else fails, you can have wine with that apple cider doughnut. #winning

Autumn Wish List

I give in, fall is here! And with it, comes fall shopping [oh how I miss those back-to-school shopping trips!]. Here’s what’s at the top of my wish list for this autumn season…

Fall 2013 Wish List

[ 1 ] Field Jacket (J.Crew, $148):: I have yet to find a more perfect example of a not-too-heavy, not-too-light jacket for fall. Ideally, I’d love a Barbour, but this J.Crew version would do just fine!
[ 2 ] Quilted Jacket (Jack Wills, $148):: For days a bit chillier and for events a bit dressier. I tried this one from Jack Wills on and it feels like butter. So incredibly soft.
[ 3 ] Belts (Kiel James Patrick, $85):: For adding fun fall pops to plain skirts + trousers.
[ 4 ] (Kiel James Patrick, $112)
[ 5 ] Quintessential Fall Skirts (J. Crew Factory, $59.50):: Plaid, wool, tweed– I’ll take any!
[ 6 ] Penny Loafers (Frye, $160):: Just darling. What more needs to be said?
[ 7 ] Baseball Cap [Harding-Lane, $30):: I'm rarely interested in hats, but I am LOVING the look of casual caps as accessories this fall.
[ 8 ] Kelly Green (ASOS, $37):: Any and all of it.
[ 9 ] Tortoise (Sea Lily, $110):: Any and all of it.
[ 10 ] Ballet Flats (J.Crew, $158):: I have this terrible fear of wearing out my favorite riding boots, and I haven’t found a pair I love as much since I bought them three years ago. So to give them days of rest, ballet flats it is!

What are you wishing on this fall? Remember, 25% off everything at J.Crew this weekend with code SHOPFALL!

Jack Wills Fall ’13

Jack Wills never ceases to impress me, and this fall’s lookbook is no exception. I didn’t even like shades of dark red and purple before I opened their current catalogue, and now I seem to be fully convinced that damson plum is the shade of the season.

[1] Hunston Hoodie, $79.50
[2] Glenthorne Brogue, $298
[3] Austerberry Blazer, $288
[4] Laindon Dress, $128
[5] Frothlin Skirt, $69.50
[6] Hollingworth Chino, $79.50
[7] Alchester Dress, $98.50
[8] Kelfield Crew, $138
[9] Penbury Satchel, $348
[10] Stoneyfold Belt, $39.50

What colors and pieces are at the top of your wish list this fall?

How to Transition Your Lilly for Fall

I was doing a bit of spring fall cleaning the other day, and realized that my wardrobe is way too full of summer clothes for living in an area that really only gets to experience true summer weather two, maybe three, months of the year.

Ok, in all fairness, this was not the first time I realized this, but such has not stopped me from continuing to invest in loads of sundresses with bright, springy prints and colors. So, I’m feeling it necessary to find a way to transition them for fall. A bit of leather, some browns, blacks, and navy, plus jackets + blazers should do just the trick.

Fall Accessories 3

[ Dawson Dress, Lilly Pulitzer, $268 ]

Do you invest in a fully separate fall//winter wardrobe, or do you make your dresses last all year?

Spiked Cider

Cinnamon schnapps, cinnamon sticks, and warm apple cider? What’s not to love about this fall cocktail courtesy of one of my go-to books, Party Drinks!? I highly suggest this spiced treat this time of year, preferably while wearing similar attire.

By the Fire

There is something so perfectly autumnal about cozying up around a big bonfire with hot chocolate and s’mores. My friends used to treck out to the quiet suburban areas of Cambridge from downtown Boston numerous times a year for these, but there is no better time to host them than fall.

A Cambridge Fall

harvard square t station

I remember being quite young and reading an article in some teen magazine or another about the coolest college campuses. Harvard University was on that list, due in large part– I’m sure– to the preppy-meets-hipster sanctuary that is Harvard Square. I spent this past unseasonably warm Saturday strolling between the Square and the Charles River, where The Head of the Charles Regatta was taking place– an October tradition I’ve tried to make a point to come to since I first moved to Boston. Clam chowder, pumpkin beer, and old fashioned sarsaparilla were enjoyed. I do recommend it.

All-American Fall

AG Stevie Polka Dot Ankle

Cardigan, H&M [similar] // AG Stevie Polka Dot Pants, Anthropologie [similar] // Pearls, J.Crew // Bracelets, Alex & Ani; Kiel James Patrick // Le Pliage Tote, Longchamp // Flats, Lacoste [similar]

I feel fortunate to be one of those lucky New England residents who get Columbus Day off from work. I spent this year’s Monday holiday, appropriately yet not intentionally, dressed in rather American colors, walking around a small Massachusetts town and finally having a chance to breathe and appreciate the beauty of early autumn.
