I think this particular outfit pretty accurately sums up my MO when it comes to shopping:: spend on statement pieces; save on basics.
Sweater, jeans* = Forever 21. Pearls, oxford, heels = bargain bins. Kate Spade tote = ok, that was the splurge.
It’s these unique pieces—KSNY pretties and Lilly dresses, among others—that I won’t find anywhere else, and that I save up to splurge on. The basics? Unless I’m going to wear them to death, I take the opportunity to save.
*Fun tidbit on how to buy boyfriend jeans::
The boyfriend “cut” has never looked right on me, so my secret?
Buy a pair of straight leg jeans just a size or two too big for you, cuff ’em, and voila!

How do you determine what’s worth it to spend or save on?

Love this outfit! I feel like a lot of people do the opposite – splurge on the basic staples and save on things that are more trendy or statement. I like your philosophy, though … those unique pieces are what make dressing fun.

Totally see this, I should have stressed that more: My exception is basic items that I wear and wash all the time– my Old Navy chambray shirt sure was a steal, but has almost completely lost its color after no more than 3-4 washes. Upgrading to the Madewell version next time!

I love your philosophy! I actually have been doing the opposite: I spend on basics that I can wear over and over and I save on statement pieces. I like your way because then you can find some pretty special statement pieces. 🙂

Emily, I so agree with your premise and I adore your Kate Spade bag. I love your basics to and they look just as good as more expensive pieces. This is a wonderful post and such fun to read.
