A couple weeks ago, I joined some of my favorite Boston Bloggers for a wild night at my favorite kind of bar– Drybar. I’ve tried other local blow dry salons and always walk away happy, but I have to say, Drybar is really something special.
[ pictured:: Alex + her adorbs stylist; a wall of products that are simply irresistible (I NEVER say yes to buying products from salons, but their dry shampoo is sodanggood); and, the cutest branding ever, in shades of bumblebee. ]
For $40, you get to pick two poisons: your cocktail + your blowout [I opted for a Prosecco to drink and a Cosmo-Tai to wear]. It’s the ultimate in pampering from then on out. The Chestnut Hill staff is SO sweet, and I was beyond impressed with the space and the service.
While personally I can’t stop thinking about how fun of a pre-bachelorette party could be thrown here, Drybar is also the perfect solution to looking your best before a special date night, big meeting or presentation at work, interview, wedding [I admit that I am the WORST at doing my hair when I am just a wedding guest... and I definitely regret I when I see photos later], or even just when you require a little pampering and don’t need a full-on haircut or want to pay salon prices.
Alli Web: you are doing something right that I sure wish I had thought of first!
Have you been to a Drybar or other blowout salon? Click for locations to see if there’s one [or a few!] near you.
Full disclosure: I received a complimentary blowout as a part of this particular event. All opinions expressed are genuine and my own.
Anyone else remember thinking that was possibly the least romantic candy heart ever?
Wishing you all a fun Valentine’s Day, be it with your sweetheart or gal pals. All you haters out there, at LEAST do yourself a favor and locate some chocolate! Then enjoy it guilt-free.
Weather allowing, I’m off to Nantucket this weekend for a little birthday celebrating! Be sure to follow along my chilly adventures via Instagram :)
This. This is The Quarterdeck. A small seaside gift shop selling every sort of nicknack, from rubber finger puppets to mood rings to seashell jewelry to vintage travel books to weathered photographs to incense to postcards to war antiques and so much more. This is my happy place.
And after 45 years in business, it is closing.
Forgive my personal pity party over here, but I feel a sort of duty to honor the harbor-side store in which I learned to shop. My parents would bring me here every summer and give me a couple dollars, to which I could spend HOURS trying to figure out how to spend. The shell ring or the mini turtle figurine or the woven change purse?! The possibilities were endless.
I realize now how much its nautical treasures and motifs shaped my own style, both in fashion and decorating. Twenty-some years later, it’s still my favorite place to shop.
I had to make one more trip down to Scituate… to say goodbye, buy
a few a ton of unnecessary but oh-so-special treasures for myself, and load up with photos to reminisce on later.

This vintage multi-strand pearl necklace? Found at the QD years ago.
If anyone lives or will be traveling to the South Shore (Massachusetts) before mid-March, everything in the store is 45% off! It also has a supporting role in the Cher classic The Witches of Eastwick, so you’ll get a little bit of Hollywood out of your trip there as well :)
Sappy girl OUT.
I thought about searching for some indulgent, chocolatey Valentine cocktail to style + share today, but then I realized it’s also my #birthdayweek… and birthdays are more of an excuse to drink anyway :)
I love most things about being a February baby, minus the winter weather [fun party dresses are always accompanied by lotsa layers]. But THIS COAT. This is a party coat! And with an Italian 75 in hand–one cocktail that embraces my love for Prosecco + lemon but also looks toward brighter, summery days with the addition of pear–I’d be a happy birthday girl.

french 75 from good spirits by a.j. rathbun
[ ingredients ]
1 oz gin
1/2 oz pear grappa
1/2 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 oz simple syrup
lemon twist for garnish
[ directions ]
1. Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice cubes. Add the gin, grappa, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Shake as if you were standing in line for the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and could only get to the front by demonstrating prodigious shaking ability.
2. Strain the mix into a flute glass. Top it off with chilled Prosecco, and garnish with the lemon twist.

Last weekend I kicked off February with such a fun morning at West Elm Fenway, crafting with some blogger gals at Kate‘s Valentine’s Day DIY Workshop! We made the sweetest little stuffed hearts that could be turned into lavender sachets, pins, necklaces, or garland– as seen on my bar cart.
Clearly I was too focussed on Kate’s darling set-up, snacks, and supplies to snap many photos of the finished products, but you can see them on Dariel and Jaime‘s blogs!
Whether hanging with your sig-other or with your lady friends, I fully support + encourage dressing for Valentine’s Day. This year, as opposed to traditional pink or red, I have my heart set on a little white number, with some sweet pink accessories to stay in theme.

What will you be rocking this V-Day? Do you scoff at the sight of all this and avoid pink + red altogether this time of year?

Espresso! That is.
We were graced with such an oddly warm weekend… just enough time to grab an iced latte before the sky turned gray, the clouds opened up, the snow/rain began, and back to frigid it was.
I’m really struggling with this whole winter thing lately. Seven years of it apparently doesn’t make you stronger. BF is done with my complaining though– he told me to take a page out of Lilly Pulitzer’s book [is he learning or what?!].
Fellow cold-climate ladies– how do you keep your spirits up in the winter?

I’m sensing a seasonal project coming on… I loved the look of our bar “cart” all decked out at Christmastime, so I thought I’d try my hand at dolling it up for Valentine’s Day. My male roommate is far from impressed at its glitter-soaked girly-girl state, but how perfect would it be for a little Galentine’s Day party?
The heart garland is from a DIY workshop Kate hosted at West Elm this past weekend– more to come on that!

Say what you may about February, but as a whole, it is my favorite month of the year. Excited to welcome it tomorrow with open arms and lots of pink, red, glitter and hearts! Plus, with the exception of this beauty, everything on the list is a sweet little steal. Happy V-Day to you!
