Getting Fresh + Pretty with Prettyology!

Julie Michaud Prettyology Boston

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of visiting Newbury Street’s Julie Michaud Prettyology, and I could not have been more impressed! This beauty lab is all about the face:: stop in for skin care, makeup application, eyelash extensions, brow tweezing… pretty much everything I can think of that I would ever need to do to my face.

Pink Walls // Chandelier

I spent my Saturday afternoon in the lab, being pampered with a facial + eye makeup application. Their facials mean business y’all. This is not at all to say it wasn’t incredibly enjoyable and relaxing, but my Skin Warrior treatment felt more like a dermatologist appointment than any old spa experience. I learned so-darn-much about my skin, and found out I’m doing a lot wrong [#oops!]. Lead Medical Aesthetician Jen Chiocchariello is a master of the face, and fixed up my winter-tormented skin while teaching me a ton of new things as well [good morning, warm lemon water with breakfast].

Prettyology Makeup Review

Then it was off to the darling Shalyn Brooks to test out The Eyes Have It– a half-hour eye makeup application that made me feel so glam, despite the rest of my face being super moisturized and embarrassing post facial extractions! [evidence here]. Shalyn got me to try something out of my normal routine, without forcing me to totally leave my comfort zone. I can’t wait to go back and get my eyes done before weddings + other events in the city this summer.

Boston Newbury Street Makeup Application/Lessons

All in all, amazing experience. This is so much more than your typical spa/salon.

And special Boston perks right now: All Boston Marathon runners receive 25% off all products, skin treatments, brow shaping, or makeup services. For anyone who purchases products, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to The One Fund for the entire month of April.

The Chestnut Hill Experience

I’ve got a whole smorgasbord of fun things to show you today! Last week, I spent the better half of my Sunday with little seester Morgan at Chestnut Hill Square, just minutes outside of Boston. Talk about supercenter! CHS has a little bit of everything– fitness, shopping, pampering, and somuch wining and dining… basically, something for every section of this blog.

Here’s a little taste of how we spent our day…

Equinox Fitness Chestnut Hill Square

Equinox:: Pilates
Anddd the photos stop here, because after Megan Fitzgerald’s amazing pilates class, I was a hot mess! I’ll be the first to admit I’m no fitness buff and would much rather start my weekend mornings snuggled in bed with a latte thank you, but waking up with a class that’s somehow both challenging and relaxing really put me in the right mood for the day. Equinox is beautiful and has so many options for classes and group fitness.

Another option for exercise in the square (besides the cardio you get from shopping, that is):: SoulCycle.

Drybar Chestnut Hill Review

Drybar:: Blowouts
I can’t say enough great things about Drybar– 4o bucks for a cocktail, hour of pampering, and a blowout that lasts multiple days? So worth it in my book. I’ve given a more thorough review here, but I also tried a Floater for the first time on this visit– a 10-minute scalp massage during your shampoo. Hi, bliss.

Brio Tuscan Grille:: Lunch
I live in the North End = I love my Italian. Brio totally lived up to expectations– my Shrimp Mediterranean was packed with flavor, but didn’t leave me feeling like I needed to detox for three days like I do after most heavy Italian meals. Fun atmosphere, and I can’t wait to go back for their brunch menu!

The Sail Loft Chestnut Hill

Shopping
Already a great variety of stores here (I visited the beautiful Anthropologie back in December), with new ones popping up each day. Most of my time this weekend was spent between Francesca’s and Sail Loft.

Francesca's Jewelry Sale

Francesca’s has one of the best selections of costume jewelry I have seen around here. Any color you need, from mint to tangerine to pearl– they’ve got it. I grabbed these quirky earrings and adore them! It’s really an accessory-lover’s heaven in there.

Sail Loft Chestnut Hill

Being overly obsessed with all things nautical and Nantucket-related, I was crazy excited to check out Sail Loft. This is the only location off of ACK, and it’s home to so many brands that you do usually only see in resort areas– Kiel James Patrick, Maui Jim, Smathers & Branson, Trina Turk… I’m having a love affair with my new GiGi New York Clutch that co-owner Peter helped me personalize.

Seasons 52 Chestnut Hill

Seasons 52:: Flights & Flats
And to refuel, wine and flatbreads! This is a fantastic deal– $15 for a full-sized flatbread and a 3-wine tasting, plus a full glass of your favorite. How perfect would this be for a date night or Girls’ Night Out? We also indulged in some incredible mini desserts… quite positive that the chocolate caramel one changed my life permanently for the better.

Many, many thanks to Chestnut Hill Square for giving us an unforgettable day! Tons more things are still to come, and I can tell this is going to be a frequent destination for me this summer.

Have you been to CHS? What are your favorites there?

MiniLuxe’s #MiniFacial Review

20140302-211707.jpg

Not gonna lie, it’s been a stressful month… or two. It has been quite a stressful winter in general actually, and I’ve been in a bit of a tense funk. So when MiniLuxe offered me the opportunity to try out their new MiniFacials, I jumped on the opportunity.

At just 30 minutes in length, they’re not so long that you need to reserve a good chunk of your day [heck, you can squeeze one in during your lunch break!], but are just long enough that you totally kick back for that half hour and unwind in total bliss. Not to mention, have all of that dry, chapped winter skin tended to!

MiniLuxe Facials

Like I experienced at Drybar, I thought it was so fun to be able to “pick your poison,” if you will: If you’re primping for a big night, go with the “Pre Party Prep” to energize, hydrate, and brighten your face, or if you’re an exhausted pulling-all-nighters student or wild party animal, opt for the “All Nighter” to cool your skin and de-puff. Tons of additional options are available for whatever your skin needs– I myself went with the traditional “Detox Diva” and felt uh-mazing walking out of there.

MiniLuxe Boston

All MiniFacials include a hand/neck/shoulder massage [hi, my favorite part], as well as vitamin- and nutrient-packet serums and moisturizers. Since they are mini facials, there’s no extracting blackheads or any of that, but isn’t that the least enjoyable part anyway?! For $40, they are the perfect little indulgence. Easily 30 of the best minutes of my month :)

MiniFacials are currently available at all MiniLuxe locations except for Brookline. It’s a wonder I haven’t already booked my next one! (or few…)

Full disclosure: I was provided a MiniFacial free of charge. All opinions expressed are genuine and my own.

A Drybar Date

Drybar Cosmo Tai Sample Blowout

A couple weeks ago, I joined some of my favorite Boston Bloggers for a wild night at my favorite kind of bar– Drybar. I’ve tried other local blow dry salons and always walk away happy, but I have to say, Drybar is really something special.

The Drybar Chestnut Hill; Boston Bloggers[ pictured:: Alex + her adorbs stylist; a wall of products that are simply irresistible (I NEVER say yes to buying products from salons, but their dry shampoo is sodanggood); and, the cutest branding ever, in shades of bumblebee. ]

For $40, you get to pick two poisons: your cocktail + your blowout [I opted for a Prosecco to drink and a Cosmo-Tai to wear]. It’s the ultimate in pampering from then on out. The Chestnut Hill staff is SO sweet, and I was beyond impressed with the space and the service.

While personally I can’t stop thinking about how fun of a pre-bachelorette party could be thrown here, Drybar is also the perfect solution to looking your best before a special date night, big meeting or presentation at work, interview, wedding [I admit that I am the WORST at doing my hair when I am just a wedding guest... and I definitely regret I when I see photos later], or even just when you require a little pampering and don’t need a full-on haircut or want to pay salon prices.

Alli Web: you are doing something right that I sure wish I had thought of first!

Have you been to a Drybar or other blowout salon? Click for locations to see if there’s one [or a few!] near you.

Full disclosure: I received a complimentary blowout as a part of this particular event. All opinions expressed are genuine and my own.

Boston’s New Blow Bar

blow dry bars boston

I had the ultimate day in pampering when I started my Sunday off at the new BeStyled blow-dry salon in Chestnut Hill yesterday morning. Picture this: iced coffee in hand (or mimosa, should you choose), big comfy styling chairs, and the classic Clueless on the big screen TV as you sit back and enjoy a blowout that costs less than most dinners in Boston.

bestyled chestnut hill

First, you have to know that I am not a blow-dryer. I do it only when absolutely necessary, like on those 20-degree winter mornings when combing my hair and letting it air dry means risking pneumonia. So when I get a haircut, I savor that sweet blow dry that leaves my hair so sleek and silky but means no work for me.

be pretty every day

BeStyled lets you enjoy that feeling without sitting through an entire a haircut, or paying a high salon price. At only $35, this is the perfect service to try before an interview or big meeting, wedding or party, special date, or girls’-night-out even. Whatever events leave you needing to look your best!

blow dry curly

Choose from Sleek, Soft, Swirly, or Swanky— your stylist will be able to offer advice on which style will work best on your hair as well. Or be trendy, and try the style of the month! I wanted a soft curl, but needing it to last the full day (my hair doesn’t hold very well), I went with swirly, knowing the curls would drop and loosen.

bestyled blow dry locations

Currently, find locations in Chestnut Hill and Wellesley, with Lynnfield’s opening this fall. I’ll say, it’s a good thing I don’t live or work just a bit closer to any of those storefronts, or I would be dishing money out to BeStyled all too often!

Do you frequent blow-dry bars? Which ones have you tried?

Pin Up Bar at Salon Mario Russo

courtney those graces blog

[ Courtney of Those Graces ]

brigitte bardot hairstyle I was so lucky to start last weekend off at Salon Mario Russo on Newbury Street, enjoying some sweet treats, chatting with fellow Boston bloggers, and playing with some 60s-style hairdos as a part of the salon’s beauty pop up bar!

I’ve gotten the chance to work with this salon before, and I can’t sing their praises enough. Last summer, stylist Sal gave me a textured side bun [that I resisted taking out for as long as possible] as a part of their Summer of Style series. Last week, their darling Leah gave me a fun little Brigitte Bardot poof, with loose curls and swept bangs [that I promptly messed up, but you see the idea].

They have a fantastic staff, and I really don’t think you could leave this beautiful corner of Newbury feeling any hint of disappointment.

Eau de Massachusetts

massachusetts fragrance

Last month, I attended the launch of the United Scents of America’s Massachusetts fragrance launch. How fun is this concept? Founders and scent experts Sasha and Samantha have teamed up to bring you the reminiscent smells of some of your favorite states– in a perfume. They use focus groups to create the scents that aim to bring back memories and embody the aura of said the states. Massachusetts is the newest in the line– which already included California, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Texas, and Hawaii. I think they hit it on the head– a little woodsy, a little salt watery, and with an overall sweetness. It really encapsulates an autumn day in my favorite New England state.

The entire line is proudly made in America and can be purchased online, or in select stores in respective states. Purchase your Massachusetts candle or perfume here, or at Shake the Tree in the North End of Boston– 67 Salem Street, Boston MA 02113.

Grapefruit Goodness

grapefruit skincare

Believe it or not, I am not a beauty product junkie. I do, from time to time, have my weak moments of spending $12 on nail polish, but other than that, I’m pretty good at only sticking to products I know I love, and especially in drugstores where it’s so easy to rack up a basket full. One of my newest loves? Yes To Grapefruit skincare products. Hello body butter // dark circle correcting cream // towelettes // SPF moisturizer // serum // scrub // and more!

yes to grapefruit

Grapefruit is the newest member of the Yes To family, whose products blend powerful fruit acids with ingredients that help to reduce hyper-pigmentation, correct skin damage, and enhance radiance.

grapefruit body butter

Why grapefruit? I could give you all the science behind it, but all you really need to know is the rich Vitamin C found the the extract is great for enhancing skin radiance and evening skin tone– something I’ve always struggled with. I apply the Dark Spot Correcting Body Cream right after showers, and after only a week my skin is feeling so much softer, and I’m already in the midst of saying goodbye to any lingering dark spots. Plus, I don’t even need to tell you how perfect the citrus smells. Like a tropical getaway in the middle of this dry and bitter winter.

grapefruit towelettes

The best part about all of this? No mail-order. No brand reps. No wandering around department store beauty counters. All Yes To products can be found at stores like Target and Walgreens at drugstore prices that won’t break the bank. You can buy them online here and here, but I just dare you to tell me you’re not within five miles of one of the stores listed here :)

SPF

I’m excited to present a little video I did with Bona Clara (remember my review of their skin care line here?) I got to show off one of my favorite products of theirs– the SPF moisturizer. I’m no vlogger so go easy on me! :)

The SPF 29 sunscreen + moisturizer runs at $40 and is worth every penny– I am SO thrilled to not have to worry about greasy sunscreen all over my face this summer! Click here to shop the SPF that’s right for your age.

Love your skin. At any age.

bona clara logo

I have a bad habit of taking a lot of things for granted, and one of those things is my skin. In my twenties, I’m out of my adolescent break-out phase, and not yet old enough to have to worry about my skin aging, so I should be in the clear! …Or am I? Thinking about all the late nights I come home and flop into bed without taking off my makeup… all of the carefree summer days I spend lounging in the sun… the stress caused by any twenty-something’s life that is bound to wreck havoc on my skin… now I’m a little more awake and concerned.

Bona Clara is an educational beauty brand whose purpose is to teach women about the changes happening to their skin as they age, and to help that skin age beautifully and healthily. This is not your average infomercial, skin-care-party retailer. They are truly inspiring and their products have left me feeling like I just walked out of a spa.

Bona Clara Skin Care

Whether you’re in your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s or older, Bona Clara offers products targeted to the skin challenges faced by each age group. Buy the five-step process– Cleanser, Scrub, Toner, Serum, and Treatment Cream– or buy what you feel your face needs most. I am not a product girl {as you can see by this blog’s lacking beauty section!}, but I couldn’t be happier from what I’ve tried in the Stages of Beauty line so far.

Giveaway!

Bona Clara is generously giving away a Cleanser + Scrub duo pack (and I have to admit, these are two of my favorite products in the line). Giveaway ends Friday, January 11th at 12pm EST, so get entering!
